Markets Mixed After ‘Black Monday’ China’s benchmark index, the Shanghai Composite, fell another 4 percent on Tuesday after dropping 8.4 percent the day before. Meanwhile, most Asian-Pacific exchanges were volatile after reaching three-year lows on Monday. Many fell sharply at the open, but recovered in later trading. Markets became concerned two weeks ago, when China devalued its currency, the yuan. Japan’s finance minister says he hopes the Chinese government will act to stabilise its economy. ‘Propaganda’ to be Shut Off Seoul has agreed to turn off its cross-border loudspeaker broadcasts. It came after Pyongyang expressed ‘regret’ that two South Korean soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion earlier this month. The mine blew up in the demilitarised zone between the two Koreas. The agreement came after more than 40 hours of talks. It allowed both sides to step back from a possible military conflict. South Korean President Park Geun-hye had earlier demanded Pyongyang apologise for the mine incident. North Korea denied planting the explosive. UK Seeks to Curb Illegal Immigration The UK government has proposed a new immigration bill that increases penalties for people working illegally in England and Wales. It said they would face up to six months in prison and could have their wages seized. Businesses employing them would also be fined. Employers will have to do background checks on their workers and would no longer be able to claim they didn’t know employees were working illegally. The bill is set to be introduced this autumn. UN Holds LGBT Rights Meeting The UN Security Council has met to discuss rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people for the first time. The meeting focused on ISIS militant attacks on sexual minorities. Openly gay Syrian refugee Subhi Nahas, said ISIS has established courts for the crime of ‘sodomy.’ The group has claimed to have killed at least 30 people because of their sexual orientation. Chad and Angola were the only two of the 15 council members who didn’t attend. Facebook: https://
