In a second, the momentum built toward a national boxing title crashed to a halt. The 14-year-old amateur boxer was jumping and pulling off flips with his siblings Feb. 25, 2016, at the Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Mechanicsburg. Each stunt led up to the “crazy flip,” as he called it, that caused him to fall and injure his leg. It was only after he tried to stand up that he noticed the bone that was sticking out. After his father Alex Perez brought him to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Angel realized that he might not be the same for a while. “My brothers box, my whole family (boxes),” he said. “I thought, man, I’d be the only one not to make it out to become a professional boxer like I always wanted to since I was a kid.” Doctors said it might take a few years for Angel to recover, his coach Jose Martinez said. Instead, he could walk again after 10 months. One year after the injury, he competed in the national Silver Gloves Championship in Independence, Missouri. He’s now the national champion for 132-pound boxers between the ages of 14 and 15. “It turns out, the first time he ever makes it to the nationals, you know, he wins it all,” Jose said. “It’s just amazing. This was his last year as far as his age group. For him to catch it at the last moment after his injury, it’s a dream come true.” Read the full story:
